The railway line between Wigan North Western and Bolton stations is being electrified as part of a £78m investment which will allow electric trains to operate between Wigan, Bolton and onward into Manchester.
This will enable better journeys for passengers and a cleaner, greener and quieter railway for our neighbours.
The project will involve installing 450 new overhead line equipment structures, alterations to 17 bridges and improvements at two level crossings.
Platforms will also be extended at Hindley, Westhoughton and Ince stations to help reduce overcrowding at peak times and make space for six-carriage trains.
